The Signal Hill wildfire near Pemberton, British Columbia, has reached a significant milestone after the BC Wildfire Service announced that the blaze is now classified as “being held,” meaning it is expected to remain within its current boundaries under existing conditions. Although the fire is no longer spreading uncontrollably, emergency officials continue to urge residents to remain vigilant as firefighting operations continue.
The wildfire, first discovered on July 15, burned to approximately 97 hectares on Signal Hill, just south of the Village of Pemberton. The fire is believed to have been human-caused, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Firefighters have worked around the clock to establish containment lines, extinguish hotspots, and protect nearby homes and infrastructure.
During the height of the emergency, the wildfire prompted evacuation alerts for parts of Pemberton and an evacuation order for the One Mile Lake Park area. Officials have since rescinded the evacuation alert for most of the village after determining that the immediate threat to life and property had diminished. However, the evacuation order for One Mile Lake Park remains in place to support ongoing firefighting efforts and ensure public safety.
The Village of Pemberton described the wildfire’s new status as an important milestone but emphasized that residents should continue following official guidance. Fire crews remain on scene monitoring conditions, strengthening containment lines, and watching for flare-ups that could occur if weather conditions change.
The Signal Hill wildfire was one of several significant fires burning across British Columbia during a period of intense lightning activity and dry weather. More than 100 active wildfires have been reported across the province, stretching firefighting resources and leading to evacuation orders in several communities.
Authorities continue to remind residents and visitors to avoid the affected area, respect all road closures and evacuation orders, and rely on official updates from the BC Wildfire Service and local emergency officials. Even though the wildfire is being held, changing weather, wind, or dry conditions could still pose challenges for firefighters.
